SCIENCE SUMMER CAMP (MON. 5 Aug. – FRI. 9 Aug. 2019)

Dates: Monday 5 August until Friday 9 August inclusive.

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am).

 

Age: 4 to 8 (children are organised into separate groups according to their age and level of knowledge).

 

Location: Baden Powell House. 65-67 Queens Gate. SW7 5JS.

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcome.

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day.

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Students learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 5 August: Forensics

Forensics is an area of science that investigate crime scenes and gathers evidence for the purpose of solving a crime. In this session, we will recreate a crime scene and children will use forensic techniques to find the guilty culprit.

 

 

Tuesday 6 August: Famous Biologists

Famous biologists look into renowned experiments from famous biologists of the past. Children will recreate Fleming’s unexpected discovery of penicillin, Pasteur and his work on the germ theory of disease and Leeuwenhoek’s work on microscopes.

 

 

Wednesday 7 August: Chemical Synthesis

Chemical synthesis teaches children about how adding certain chemicals can alter the properties of another substance. Children will learn about polymers and more. Experiments in this session include water-absorbing polymers and exothermic reactions.

 

 

Thursday 8 August: Ancient Roman Science

The Ancient Romans were renowned for their contributions to architecture, engineering and science. In this session, children will learn and participate in experiments looking at Roman roads, aqueducts and more.

 

 

Friday 9 August: The Universe and Beyond

In this space-themed session, children will learn about the Solar System, Milk Way, stars, constellations and more. Children can expect to participate in experiments including modelling black holes and planets.
