Dates: Monday 29 July until Friday 2 August inclusive.

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am).

 

Age: 9 to 14. STRICTLY FOR CHILDREN AGED 9-14. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. (children are organised into separate groups according to their age and level of knowledge).

 

Location: Chemical Engineering building. Imperial College Road. SW7 2AZ.

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcome.

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day.

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Children learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

The emphasis is on fun, yet we inspire learning about concepts through dialogue and questioning.
We will be offering brand new programmes for each week in summer.

Monday 29 July: The Maze Escape Challenge

In this opening session, your child will use Lego Mindstorms EV3 to successfully navigate a maze. We will reinforce the kinematics of the robot before practising obstacle avoidance. The session will culminate in the maze challenge.

 

 

Tuesday 30 July: Past, Present and Future – PID Controller

In this Arduino-based session, children will learn the principles behind a PID controller. This session will focus on proportional gain, which will be applied to the control of the DC motor. Children will gain an insight into the real-world applications of PID controllers.

 

 

Wednesday 31 July: The Microbit

The microbit is a mini computer with programmeable LED lights. In this session, children will gain an insight into the functionalities of the microbit before progressing to more challenging tasks such as building a burglary detection system.

 

 

Thursday 1 August: Create your own Adventure

In this coding-based session,children will have the opportunity to develop an adventure game in a 2D graphical environment. They will be encouraged to work as a team and write complementary functions that will interact with each other.

 

 

Friday 2 August: The Remote-Controlled Challenge

In this robotics-based challenge, your child will program the robot to navigate a complex path while being remotely guided to collect a ball and take it back to the beginning of the path. A time-based competition will take place at the end of the session for all children.
