ENGLISH AND DEBATING SUMMER CAMP (MON. 15 JULY – FRI. 19 JULY 2019)

Dates: Monday 15 July until Friday 19 July inclusive.

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am).

 

Age: 9 to 14. STRICTLY FOR CHILDREN AGED 9-14. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. (children are organised into separate groups according to their age and level of knowledge).

 

Location: Chemical Engineering building. Imperial College Road. SW7 2AZ.

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcome.

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day.

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Children learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 15 July: Persuasive Speech

Speaking in a persuasive tone and manner is one of the more significant areas of public speaking. In this session, your child, will analyse persuasive speeches of the past before composing their own speech to sell a new product, for example.

 

 

Tuesday 16 July: City Planners of the Future

In this session, children will work as a team, listen and collaborate as they are tasked with planning a sustainable city for the future. Your child will participate in debates, panel discussions and expert interviews before deciding on the best strategy to take.

 

 

Wednesday 17 July: Improving Public Speaking Skills

In this session, children will develop their debating and public speaking skills by participating in debates on new technologies and the use of mobile phones in schools. Children must speak with confidence, poise and certainty.

 

 

Thursday 18 July: Poetry

Poetry is an area of literature focusing on aesthetics and rhyme. In this session, we will reinforce the different types of poems and techniques employed in poetry writing. Children will be tasked with analysing poems and writing their own poem to present to their peers.

 

 

Friday 19 July: The Presidential Debate

Children will be looking at ways that public speaking can convey power by looking at a presidential speech. Drawing on speeches they themselves have written, children will present short speeches as a way of practising public speaking. Children will then progress to creating a campaign for a 2020 election.
