When: Monday 6 August until Friday 10 August inclusive

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am)

 

Children: 9 to 14 (children are organised into separate groups depending on their age and level of knowledge).

***STRICTLY FOR CHILDREN AGED 9 AND ABOVE. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE***

 

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcomed

 

Location: Imperial College London. Skempton Building. Imperial College Road. SW7 2BB

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Students learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 6 August: Boring Tunnels

In this session, your child will gain an appreciation that tunnels are not just boring holes underground. Children will have the unique opportunity to form tunnels using different methods. They will also be tasked with working on a budget and meeting deadlines.

 

Tuesday 7 August: Good Vibrations

In good vibrations, your child will learn about the properties and uses of waves. Children will learn about longitudinal and transverse waves and will be tasked with constructing the most sound-proof box amongst many other things.

 

Wednesday 8 August: Foundations and Structures

This engineering and science-themed day will teach children about the importance of solid foundations when constructing buildings. Children will test different samples and will make a decision on the most suitable foundation to use and many more structural-based activities.

 

Thursday 9 August: Robotics (The Shooting Challenge)

Children will be introduced to the Lego Mindstorms EV3 software and hardware before practising programming the robot to move. Children will be challenged in a competition where they must successfully shoot at a target and use the correct sensors and motors to do so.

 

Friday 10 August: Electronics, Coding and More

Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary subject that incorporates mechanical engineering, electronics and computing. Children will learn about the working principles of Arduino as they are tasked with assembling a circuit using different components such as LEDs.
