When: Monday 6 August until Friday 10 August inclusive

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am)

 

Children: 4 to 11 (children are organised into separate groups depending on their age and level of knowledge)

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcomed

 

Location: Imperial College London. Huxley Building. Queens Gate. SW7 2RH

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Students learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 6 August: Medical Marvels

This session looks at how medical science has developed over the past two-hundred years and beyond. Children will learn about how stethoscopes work and will have the opportunity to use one. They will also investigate the best antiseptic to use and why this is a must in hospitals.

 

Tuesday 7 August: Science around London Town

We use landmarks around London to teach children about different scientific concepts. This includes forces, shape and materials. For instance, children will be learning about the different forces that act on underground tunnels under London.

 

Wednesday 8 August: Organic Chemistry

In this session, your child will learn about what is meant by the term organic chemistry. Your child will cover the fundamentals of chemistry such as atoms, compounds and bonds. Along with, sub-atomic particles, all in a practical and hands-on way.

 

Thursday 9 August: Microscopic Microbes

Microbes are bacteria, fungi, viruses and more. Children will learn about the unique shape, structure and function of microbes and will also take part in experiments to grow their own microbes across different products.

 

Friday 10 August: Palaeontology

Palaeontology is the scientific study of life that existed before. This includes dinosaurs and other plants and animals. Your child will adopt the role of a palaeontologist as they take part in a model excavation, learn about fossil formation and dinosaurs.
