When: Monday 30 July until Friday 3 August inclusive

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am)

 

Children: 4 to 11 (children are organised into separate groups depending on their age and level of knowledge)

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcomed

 

Location: Imperial College London. Huxley Building. Queens Gate. SW7 2RH

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Students learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 30 July: Superhero Science

Using superheroes as our context, children will learn and discover a variety of different scientific concepts such as gravity, magnetism and materials. Children will in teams as they build a zip line and test it amongst other things.

 

Tuesday 31 July: Fantastic Forces

In this session, children will learn about the different types of forces such as friction, air resistance, weight and gravity. Children will take part in experiments that will investigate the best surface to slow a car down and balancing a see-saw, amongst others.

 

Wednesday 1 August: Under Pressure

Under pressure introduces children to pressure and what this term means scientifically. Children will investigate the pressure exerted by themselves, the pressure in fizzy drinks and more. They will also learn about and use the formula to calculate pressure.

 

Thursday 2 August: The World of the Cell

We go microscopic in this session as your child learns about the structure and function of different cells in the body. Children will be examining different slides under the microscope and will be making their own model cells.

 

Friday 3 August: Fizzy Science

In this chemistry-based session, children will take part in a medley of different chemical reactions that produce a gas. Children will learn about exothermic and neutralisation reactions.
