SCIENCE SUMMER CAMP (MON. 29 JULY – FRI. 2 Aug. 2019)

Dates: Monday 29 July until Friday 2 August inclusive.

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am).

 

Age: 4 to 8 (children are organised into separate groups according to their age and level of knowledge).

 

Location: Baden Powell House. 65-67 Queens Gate. SW7 5JS.

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcome.

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day.

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Students learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 29 July: Zombie Science

In zombie science, your child will learn about the anatomy and physiology of an eyeball, the antimicrobial properties of different bacterial agents and the chemical properties of slime. Children will also learn the best ways to overcome a zombie apocalypse.

 

 

Tuesday 30 July: So Many States

So many states incorporate the similarities and differences between solids, liquids and gases. Children will model kinetic theory and complete a variety of different chemistry experiments including making a non-Newtonian fluid and dry ice.

 

 

Wednesday 31 July: Brilliant Bioengineering

Brilliant bioengineering teaches children how knowledge of engineering is applied to biology. In this session, children will construct an artificial leg, hand and compose a new glue for a cast.

 

 

Thursday 1 August: Forestry

In this session, your child will learn about the properties of trees, photosynthesis, leaves and more. Children will participate in experiments that separate the different dyes in leaves, the role of the xylem and phloem in transportation.

 

 

Friday 2 August: Nuclear Science

In this session, children will learn about nuclear physics and how the energy produced can be harnessed. Children will model nuclear fission, chain reactions, control rods and will design and construct a nuclear power station.
