When: Monday 13 August until Friday 17 August inclusive

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am)

 

Children: 9 to 14 (children are organised into separate groups depending on their age and level of knowledge)

***STRICTLY FOR CHILDREN AGED 9 AND ABOVE. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE***

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcomed

 

Location: Imperial College London. Skempton Building. Imperial College Road. SW7 2BB

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Students learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 13 August: Electrical Engineering  

Electrical engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the study and application of electricity and electronics. In this session, will be guided through the core concepts of electricity. Your child will then progress to how batteries work and what electrical installations are composed of.

 

Tuesday 14 August: Friction in Action

Friction is a force that occurs when two surfaces are sliding or rubbing past each other. In this session, your child will investigate friction using different surfaces. They will also build a model road surface that will cause a car to break in the quickest time possible and many more.

 

Wednesday 15 August: Robotics (The Maze Challenge)

In this session, your child will learn about the contributions that robots can make towards assisting those in need. Children will learn about the software used to programme the Lego Mindstorms EV3 robot and will then be tasked with using the gripper to pick and place an object.

 

Thursday 16 August: Maths, Money and More

We use money as our context in this mathematics-based session as children learn and discover a wide-range of topics including VAT, profit, pounds, shillings and pence and exchange rates.

 

Friday 17 August: Mechatronics

In this session, children will be exploring the interdisciplinary topic of mechatronics. Children will gain an appreciation that mechatronics incorporates elements of coding, electronics and mechanical engineering. They will be set a number of challenges using Arduino.
