Monday 16 December: What is Debating and Public Speaking?

In the first session of the camp, children will be introduced to debating and public speaking. They will discuss what debating and public speaking involve and when and where debating and public speaking might be used by analysing videos of some key public figures.

Tuesday 17 December: The Presidential Speech

Children will be looking at ways that public speaking can convey power by looking at a presidential speech. Drawing on speeches they themselves have written, children will present short speeches as a way of practising public speaking. Children will then progress to creating a campaign for a 2020 election.

Wednesday 18 December: The Judicial System

Your child will look at cases of individuals who are accused of committing crimes. They must work in teams to produce a ‘defence case’ and then present their case to the rest of the class. They will understand the difference between witting and unwitting evidence and also the difference between primary and secondary sources of information or data.

Thursday 19 December: The Science Controversy

In today’s session, children will take on the role of a scientist or member of the public and will participate in debates on the use of stem cells in research. Your child will also participate in a mock poster presentation where they will present and discuss their scientific research to their peers.

Friday 20 December: Out of Space Exploration

The final session of the week will consider the benefits of out-of-space exploration.Analysing and debating the many technological benefits which space exploration has provided is pitted against the high government costs and lives lost in outer space exploration.
