MATHEMATICS SUNDAY CLASSES
Description
Programme
*** PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS COURSE HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO DEVELOP MATHEMATICAL REASONING*** THIS IS NOT A COURSE FOR EXAM PREPARATION ***
***SPRING TERM CLASSES WITH BRAND NEW TOPICS, TASKS AND PROJECTS***
We continue fostering successful learners by putting the power of mathematics into the minds and hands of children.
We offer an exclusive opportunity to develop mathematical reasoning with specialists in the field. Children are encouraged to explore and develop their mathematical skills in an environment that is conducive to learning while having fun.
Location: Baden Powell House. 65-67 Queens Gate. SW7 5JS. (Contact us on +4475 3522 5432 should you need directions on where to find us)
The importance of learning mathematics at a young age
Teaching mathematics to young children from an early age is important as they can develop basic numeracy and spatial skills. However, it is also very important to teach children how to develop mathematical reasoning. Mathematical reasoning enables children to make use of all their other mathematical skills. Reasoning is part of a much wider set of skills that are required to help children develop mathematically and allow them to think critically. To do this successfully, we continue encouraging children to gather and interpret information to solve problems and make informed decisions based on what they know.
The art of mathematics teaches children to develop reasoning in a more applied manner.
Academic impact
Developing mathematical reasoning enable children to advance in their understanding of mathematical concepts. Nowadays, solid development of skills appears to be more important than knowledge itself. Undoubtedly, children who are constantly supported to develop mathematical reasoning are more likely to learn and think creatively and critically, no matter their career fields.
Extra-curricular impact: the development of skills for life
Mathematics makes our life orderly and prevents chaos. Certain qualities that are nurtured by mathematics are the power of reasoning, creativity, abstract or spatial thinking, critical thinking, problem-solving ability, teamwork, resilience and even effective communication skills. Many parents enrol their children in this course to support them to develop a different way of thinking about mathematics that goes beyond the school curriculum.
The emphasis is on fun, yet we inspire learning about concepts through dialogue and questioning.
In this course, children will:
Learn and consolidate fundamental principles of mathematics
Apply existing mathematical knowledge within a given context
Aim to develop mathematical reasoning
Work on practical activities such as working on their own projects
Develop problem-solving skills, teamwork and resilience
Topics include:
Reading and interpreting graphs, place value, negative and positive numbers, multiplication, division, decimals, angles, polygons, area, perimeter, length, mass, capacity, estimation, Pythagoras’ theorem, various algebraic topics, problem-solving, functional mathematics and mathematical reasoning.
