DEBATING & PUBLIC SPEAKING EASTER CAMP (Mon. 06/04 – Thu.09/04)

When: Monday 6 April until Thursday 9 April inclusive

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am)

 

Children: 9 to 14 (children are organised into separate groups depending on their age and level of knowledge)

***STRICTLY FOR CHILDREN AGED 9 AND ABOVE. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE***

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcome

 

Location: Skempton Building. Imperial College Road. SW7 2BB (contact us on 075 3522 5432 should you need directions on the day).

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day

Effective critical thinking. Elaborating an argument, putting forward an argument, debating, negotiating and deconstructing an opposition argument. Developing dialogue and conversational skills. Persuasive techniques. Statement and connectives. Discussion and Decision making. Structuring a speech. Public Speaking techniques.

 

The emphasis is on fun, yet we inspire learning about concepts through dialogue and questioning.

Monday 6 April: Crime and Criminals

In this session, children will put into practice skills such as interpretation, proposing a solution and more. Children will be introduced to a number of key criminological concepts and will be tasked with debating the prevalence of knife crime in London.

 

 

Tuesday 7 April: The Criminal Justice System

Your child will look at cases of individuals who are accused of committing crimes. They must work in teams to produce a ‘defence case’ and then present their case to the rest of class. They will understand the difference between witting and unwitting evidence and also the difference between primary and secondary sources of information or data.

 

 

Wednesday 8 April: Nature versus Nurture Debate

The nature versus nurture debate is a classic way of understanding the purpose of creating an argument. Children will be asked to create a list of points for or against ‘nature’ and another set of points for or against ‘nurture’. Working in groups, children will put forward different arguments,  

 

 

Thursday 9 April: Gender

Children are introduced to the topic of the gender pay gap. They learn about the differences in earnings that exist between men and women in the capital. Children will explore the background of this issue and how it is a global issue, but one which continues to occur in London.

 

 

Friday 10 April: NO SESSIONS – GOOD FRIDAY –  UK BANK HOLIDAY.
