ADVANCED SCIENCE SUMMER CAMP (MON. 8 JULY – FRI. 12 JULY 2019)

Dates: Monday 8 July until Friday 12 July inclusive.

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am).

 

Age: 9 to 14. STRICTLY FOR CHILDREN AGED 9-14. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. (children are organised into separate groups according to their age and level of knowledge).

 

Location: Royal School of Mines building. Prince Consort Road. SW7 2BP.

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcome.

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day.

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Children learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 8 July: Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-containing compounds. In this session, children will construct carbon-based compounds with MolyMods and participate in experiments with carbon-containing compounds such as carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acid.

 

 

Tuesday 9 July: Captivating Crystals

Crystallisation is a process whereby a liquid solution is converted into solid crystals. In this session, your child will examine crystals using microscopes and will grow different varieties of crystals that they may take home.

 

 

Wednesday 10 July: Surgical Science  

Surgical science teaches children about the surgical and antiseptic techniques required for surgery. Children will investigate the most effective antimicrobial agents, key hole surgery and the fundamental steps of open-heart surgery as they perform a heart dissection.

 

 

Thursday 11 July: Botanical Science  

Botany is the study of plants including their structure and properties. In this session, children will investigate the properties of soil, the anatomy of plants and the chemical properties of plants including anthocyanins.

 

 

Friday 12 July: Astrophysics

Astrophysics is a branch of astronomy concerned with the physical nature of stars and other celestial objects. In this session, children will learn about the physical properties of stars, planets and moon as they participate in a range of experiments including blackholes.

 

 

We offer 10% discount on siblings booking and multiple bookings.
Any days booked individually will be charged at £90.00 per child.
