ADVANCED SCIENCE SUMMER CAMP (MON. 5 AUG. – FRI. 9 AUG. 2019)

Dates: Monday 5 August until Friday 9 August inclusive.

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am).

 

Age: 9 to 14. STRICTLY FOR CHILDREN AGED 9-14. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. (children are organised into separate groups according to their age and level of knowledge).

 

Location: Royal School of Mines building. Prince Consort Road. SW7 2BP.

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcome.

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day.

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Children learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 5 August: Chemical Reactions

Chemical reactions occur when chemical bonds are broken and reformed. In this session, children will learn about bonds, balancing equations and molecules. Children will participate in a range of different chemical reactions throughout the day.

 

 

Tuesday 6 August: Entomology

Entomology is the scientific study of insects. In this session, children will learn about the anatomy and physiology of insects along with their behavioural traits. Your child will dissect a cockroach, create model insects, experiment with different stimuli and more.

 

 

Wednesday 7 August: Medical Marvels

In this session, children will recreate well-known medical experiments of the past. Children will look at the role of transplantation, antisepsis and antibiotics. Children will dissect a rat, practice suturing and more.

 

 

Thursday 8 August: Current and Voltage

Current and voltage are fundamental concepts in electricity. In this session, children will construct their own electrical circuits and measure both the current and voltage. Children will also calculate the resistance of a circuit as part of Ohm’s law.

 

 

Friday 9 August: Skin and Bone

The skin and bone make up the integumentary system and skeletal system respectively. In this session, your child will learn about the structure of each system as they create a model skeleton and dissect a chicken wing and much more.
