ADVANCED SCIENCE SUMMER CAMP (MON. 22 JULY – FRI. 26 JULY 2019)

Dates: Monday 22 July until Friday 26 July inclusive.

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am).

 

Age: 9 to 14. STRICTLY FOR CHILDREN AGED 9-14. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. (children are organised into separate groups according to their age and level of knowledge).

 

Location: Royal School of Mines building. Prince Consort Road. SW7 2BP.

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcome.

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day.

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Children learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 22 July: Aeronautics

Aeronautics is the study, design and manufacture of flying machines. In this session, your child will learn about the processes underlying flight such as jet engines, Bernoulli’s principle and more as they recreate airplane wings, propellers and gliders.

 

 

Tuesday 23 July: Astrobiology

Astrobiology is the study of life in the universe. In this session children will compare the growth of microorganisms under UV light, make their own alien slime and examine the contents of unknown soil samples.

 

 

Wednesday 24 July: Good Vibrations

Good vibrations teach children about the science behind communication including sound waves, optical fibres and radio waves. Children will experiment with microwaves, radio waves, resonance and create an anatomical model of the ear.

 

 

Thursday 25 July: The Aquatic World

In this marine biology-based session, children will learn and discover the structure and function of aquatic plants, animals and the underwater world. Children will dissect a fish, model the different ocean layers and build a scale model of a beach.

 

 

Friday 26 July:  Exothermic or Endothermic

Exothermic and endothermic reactions are ones which release heat or take in heat from the surroundings respectively. In this session, children will learn about enthalpy, bond energies and activation energy as they participate with hands-on experiments.
