ADVANCED SCIENCE SUMMER CAMP (MON. 19 AUG. – FRI. 23 AUG. 2019)

Dates: Monday 19 August until Friday 23 August inclusive.

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am).

 

Age: 9 to 14. STRICTLY FOR CHILDREN AGED 9-14. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. (children are organised into separate groups according to their age and level of knowledge).

 

Location: Royal School of Mines building. Prince Consort Road. SW7 2BP.

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcome.

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day.

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Children learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 19 August: Astrochemistry

Astrochemistry is the study of molecules and chemical reactions in the universe. In this session, children will participate in experiments that recreate or model those that occur in the universe such as nuclear fission.

 

 

Tuesday 20 August: Oceanography

Oceanography is the study of phenomena and properties of seas. Children will participate in a range of activities that examine the role of marine creatures, sand, sea water and more. Children will learn about the different layers in the ocean, the anatomy and physiology and more.

 

 

Wednesday 21 August: Energetic Enzymes

Enzymes are biological catalysts that help to speed up the rate of reaction. In this session, children will learn about the role of enzymes in washing powders and fruits, and the purpose of catalase in the liver. Your child will learn a range of concepts.

 

 

Thursday 22 August: Excretion and Waste

Excretion is one of the seven life processes. In this session, children will model how digestion works, how the kidneys remove waste products and the role of the lungs. Your child will have a unique opportunity to dissect a kidney and a liver.

 

 

Friday 23 August: Pharmaceutical Science

Using pharmacy as our theme, children will become pharmacists for the day as they learn about how drugs work, how they bind to receptors and how medication is dispensed. Please be aware that children will use model drugs and not real ones.

 

 

We offer 10% discount on siblings booking and multiple bookings.
Any days booked individually will be charged at £90.00 per child.
