ADVANCED SCIENCE SUMMER CAMP (MON. 12 AUG. – FRI. 16 AUG. 2019)

Dates: Monday 12 August until Friday 16 August inclusive.

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am).

 

Age: 9 to 14. STRICTLY FOR CHILDREN AGED 9-14. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. (children are organised into separate groups according to their age and level of knowledge).

 

Location: Royal School of Mines building. Prince Consort Road. SW7 2BP.

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcome.

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day.

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Children learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 12 August: Atoms, Elements and Compounds

In this chemistry-based session, children will learn about atomic structure, periodic table and compounds. Children will complete a range of different experiments looking at reactivity, chemical bonds and more.

 

 

Tuesday 13 August: At the Heart of the Matter

At the heart of the matter explores the anatomy and physiology of the heart. Children will learn about the role of valves, the chambers of the heart and the electrical conductivity of the heart. Your child will dissect a heart and build a model heart.

 

 

Wednesday 14 August: Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics is an area of science which concerns heat and its relationship with other energy forms. In this session, children will make their own thermometer, investigate the best insulator and more.

 

 

Thursday 15 August: Animal Behaviour

Animal behaviour investigates a broad range of scientific concepts such as reaction time, optical illusions and responses to different stimuli. Children will learn about the importance of the brain and nervous system.

 

 

Friday 16 August: Alloys and Metals

Alloys are a combination of metals or a metal and non-metal. In this session, children will create model alloys, investigate the density of different metals along with other physical properties such as thermal and electrical conductivity.
