ADVANCED SCIENCE SUMMER CAMP (MON. 1 JULY – FRI. 5 JULY 2019)

Dates: Monday 1 July until Friday 5 July inclusive.

 

Time: From 9:00 am until 3:30 pm (registration opens at 8:40 am and closes at 8:55 am).

 

Age: 9 to 14. STRICTLY FOR CHILDREN AGED 9-14. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. (children are organised into separate groups according to their age and level of knowledge).

 

Location: Royal School of Mines building. Prince Consort Road. SW7 2BP.

 

Level: All levels of knowledge are welcome.

 

Lunch: Children bring their packed lunch, a few snacks and enough water for the day.

 

Children will be participating in a variety of demonstrations, group activities and practical experiments and will learn about exciting and enriching topics. Children learn through a hands-on approach and are welcome to take home any objects they have made throughout the week. See more details below.

Monday 1 July: Cosmetic Chemistry

In this chemistry-based session, children will learn about the chemical processes and properties of different cosmetic products. Children will produce their own soap, bath bomb and lip balm that they may take home with them.

 

 

Tuesday 2 July: The World of the Cell

Cells are the fundamental units of living things. In this session, children will learn about the components of cells and the different cell types that exist. Children will prepare their own microscope slides and model the fluid mosaic nature of the cell membrane.

 

 

Wednesday 3 July: Under Pressure

Pressure is a physics concept that is calculated by examining the force applied over an area. In this session, children will calculate the pressure exerted by a gas, on a liquid and on a solid through a range of hands-on experiments.

 

 

Thursday 4 July: Plant Behaviour

As with animals, plants respond to changes in their environment known as stimuli. In this session, your child will learn about tropisms and nastic movements. Experiments on this day will include Venus fly trap experiments and more.

 

 

Friday 5 July: Smart Materials

Smart materials are a distinct group that respond to environmental changes and may return to their original condition. In this session, your child will learn about the properties of smart materials as they experiment with thermocool sheets, hydrochromic paint and more.
